The ‘Bantry’ Trend

There is a new word doing the rounds in kitchen design, and it is one you will want to know: The Bantry. Part bar, part pantry, it is the space where your morning coffee, your favourite gin, and your everyday clutter all live behind one considered run of cabinetry.

For anyone who loves to host, it solves a problem that no amount of open shelving ever could — everything you need is within reach, and none of it is on show until you decide it should be.

What is a kitchen 'Bantry'?

A ‘bantry’ takes the storage logic of a butler’s pantry and combines it with the sociability of a home bar. Behind a run of doors, you get the practical bones of a pantry: dry goods, small appliances, glassware. In front of them, or once the doors slide away, you get a fully working drinks and coffee station, styled and lit to be part of the show when you are entertaining.

It is a natural fit for the way kitchens are actually used. Cooking happens at the island. Hosting happens wherever the drinks are. A bantry gives that second function its own dedicated home, without asking you to build an entirely new room.

A home bar within reach

The best bantries are built around one idea: nothing you need for hosting should be more than a few steps from where your guests are standing. An integrated wine cooler, a shelf of glassware lit from within, and a matching worktop interior turn a single cupboard into a showstopping home bar, ready to open the moment guests arrive.

For homeowner Mark, it’s the slide-away doors that make it effortless:

“The doors slide back in and open up so when we have friends round or any sort of special occasion, it opens up and looks fantastic.” — Mark W.

German engineering, hidden calm

A bantry only works if the cabinetry behind it is engineered to disappear. Nolte’s precision hinging and soft-close mechanisms mean a run of full-height doors opens smoothly and closes without a sound, even when they are concealing a coffee machine, a toaster, and a full pantry run behind them. That is the difference between a feature that gets used every day and one that becomes a dumping ground.

A bantry does not need its own room. Most customers start theirs with a single run of pantry cabinetry, reworked with hosting in mind. A few things are worth planning in from the start:

  • Sockets and plugs positioned inside the cabinet for a coffee machine or blender, so nothing trails across a worktop
  • Integrated lighting on shelves and interiors, so the space looks considered the moment the doors open
  • A mix of closed storage for the practical items and open or glazed shelving for glassware and display pieces
  • An integrated wine or drinks cooler where space allows, positioned at a comfortable reach rather than at floor level

Morning coffee & evening cocktails

A bantry earns its place by working just as hard on a Monday morning as it does during a Saturday night dinner party.

Sockets built into the cabinetry keep a coffee machine and toaster permanently plugged in and ready to go, while the same shelving that holds cups and saucers by day can hold spirits and mixers by night. It is one space, doing two jobs, without ever feeling cluttered.

Whether you are planning a full kitchen from scratch or reworking an existing pantry wall, a Nolte designer can help you build a bantry that suits how you actually host.
