Transforming Spaces: A Georgian Townhouse Redesign

At Nolte Kitchens UK, we take pride in crafting designs that elevate everyday living. Recently, as part of KKB's Drawing Board feature, our Milton Keynes showroom team worked on an inspiring project for Sally, the owner of a Georgian-style townhouse in Essex. This ambitious redesign reimagined the ground floor, transforming it into a versatile, open-plan space for family gatherings and relaxation.

The design brief

Sally envisioned a light, bright, and functional space to host her large family while staying true to the Georgian charm of her home. On her wish list:

  • Relocating the kitchen and dining area from the first floor to the ground floor.
  • Combining a bedroom and reception room into a single open-plan area with an extension into the garden.
  • Using natural materials such as stone, wood, and glass for a connection to the outdoors.
  • Incorporating a lantern ceiling and bi-fold doors for maximum natural light.
  • Creating a cosy seating area with a TV and a dining space with Italian-inspired elegance.

The Design Process

Led by designer Tom Pigram from Nolte Kitchens Milton Keynes, the project began with a focus on balancing practicality with aesthetic appeal. Key design elements included:

  1. A Neutral Yet Inviting Palette
The Nolte Kitchens’ Feel doors in Magnolia, paired with Holm Oak wall units and island accents, created a harmonious blend of light tones and natural textures. This approach allowed flexibility for adding bursts of colour through accessories.
  2. A Statement Island
The L-shaped island became the heart of the space, providing ample worktop area, storage, and seating. Featuring a Calacatta Sahara quartz worktop and a hob with an integrated downdraft extractor, it ensured functionality without compromising the open, airy feel.
  3. Clever Layout Solutions
Practical features like built-in ovens, a fridge, and a sink were strategically placed along the back wall to maintain the flow. The dropped ceiling above the island, with subtle LED up lighting, added a touch of sophistication.
  4. Connection to the Outdoors
Bi-fold doors and garden-facing seating areas seamlessly extended the living space outside, enhancing natural light and creating opportunities for wildlife watching.

The Outcome

Sally was thrilled with the design, describing it as “an inspired design tailored to my needs and realised in great materials and colours.”

She said, “Tom has thoughtfully interpreted my aspirational lifestyle in an exciting space. The design is full of surprises, with a lovely choice of materials and fixtures, giving the overall impression of light and space with a friendly warmth. The colours reflect the outside world perfectly. I was pleased that the seating area connected to the garden for wildlife watching and extending living space outside. I also really liked the glass doors at the rear of the room to create a seamless entrance and connect with the hallway – genius!

This made the new space look fully connected to the house instead of an addition. Overall, this is an inspired design tailored to my needs and realised in great materials and colours. I was immediately drawn to it.”

The reimagined space not only met her functional requirements but also brought warmth and character to her home.
