An Extension That Started at Grand Designs

Billy first fell in love with neoLodge at Grand Designs Live in 2023. He visited our Nottingham showroom shortly after to start his kitchen journey within a large extension at his home in Derby.

He’d already visited a few other kitchen companies before finding us. Their designs filled every wall with storage, but none of them felt like the kitchen Billy had pictured. We took a different approach from the start.

We created a chic bar area to showcase Billy’s drinks collection, a cosy coffee corner, and a space to display his Le Creuset collectables and African pottery and paintings, adding pops of colour to a modern German kitchen.

Designing Around an Existing Extension

Billy’s kitchen sits within an extension at his family home in Derby. By the time our team visited to survey the space, the plumbing, electrics and heating manifold had already been installed on the main run. That meant designing around fixed constraints rather than a blank canvas; every layout decision, from the island position to the appliance run, was planned to make the most of the space while still delivering the sociable, colourful kitchen Billy had asked for.

A Bar Worth Showing Off

At one end of the room sits a dedicated bar area, built to showcase Billy’s collection rather than hide it away. Backlit glass cabinetry displays drinks, crystal decanters and glassware, while a Miele wine cooler sits neatly below the counter. It’s a self-contained corner that turns a drinks collection into part of the open-plan design.

A Corner for Coffee

Tucked under the stairwell, a coffee corner makes use of what would otherwise have been dead space. Mid-height units and extra-depth larder cabinets sit behind the coffee machine, turning an awkward footprint into useful, hidden storage. It keeps the countertops elsewhere in the kitchen clear, while giving Billy a dedicated space for his morning routine.

Pops of Colour

Elsewhere, a glass display cabinet brings colour into the otherwise dark and moody palette of Blackened Oak and Graphite. Billy’s Le Creuset collection sits alongside pottery and paintings brought back from Africa, each piece lit and visible behind glass. Rather than competing with the kitchen’s German engineering, the collectables give it warmth and personality.

Designed for the Light

The kitchen faces south, so the team added a waterfall edge to the island to make the most of the light through the day. An elevated breakfast bar in Walnut Cuba adds a design element of its own, lifting the island and creating a spot for quick meals or a chat while someone else cooks.
